I want to be a writer. What advice can you give me?

I started writing very young and if I wasn't writing something, then I was reading something. Practice, practice, practice. One thing to think about is: What do you want to say? For me, that's where all writing starts. When you aren't writing: Read, read, read. Also practice looking at things and then describe what you are seeing.

What other jobs have you had?

I've had a lot of different jobs. I used to dress as a cowboy and drive a covered wagon, pulled by two mules (named Della & Mary). I drove it down the main street of Brampton, Ontario once, to promote a new mall. I've been a blackjack dealer in a casino (I hated that job!) and I've written for different magazines, such as Kid's Tribute. I've been a writer for over 25 years but I've also been a Disc Jockey and I've laid farm drainage tile... When I'm not writing books, I'm Vancouver Bureau Chief for Maclean's magazine.
