Lucky DeRose

Lucky DeRose was sent to the angels yesterday morning -April 1, 2003. It unexpectedly snowed this morning and he we were surprised. Lucky loved the snow - he was turning 13 years old this month. I guess you can say that 13 was the unlucky year for him.

He was a black Lab/Sheppard mix and was the best dog in the world. He guarded the family with his life, warning anyone who got close to our home that he was present with his ferocious bark. He never harmed anyone though, he was too gentle for that. He loved to run around and play and would sometimes open our sliding door with his nose and sneak into the house. He loved to eat pasta - a true Italian Dog - and knew he would get the chance to eat it if he sat and gave his paw which he would often do as a sign of appreciation and thanks.

He was such a smart puppy. I still remember opening the van door when our parents surprised us with him for my sister's 16th birthday. He hid under the seat. He had a shiny black coat and was so tiny with big floppy ears and a beautiful white patch of fur just below his neck. We named him Lucky - my Mom chose him out of a bunch of pups that were born near our cottage. They were giving them away for free. As she was searching, out popped Lucky from behind the corner and he immediately caught her eye. He was Lucky to be chosen as our dog and he had such a great life -he was a good dog. Always happy to see us, wagging his tail everytime and jumping up as if he wanted to give kisses.

We took him along with us on cottage trips where he swam in the water and played in the sand - digging holes and burying his face in the cold wet space he dug. He loved to have his belly rubbed and his nose and ears scratched. I still remember that look - his tilted face when you spoke to him - it was as if he understood exactly what you were saying and I know he always did.

He would be truly missed and will be forever in our hearts as our angel dog.
