EDGAR'S STORY
During this season of joy and goodwill, it is with heavy heart's and sadness that this story must be told.............
On November 4, 2002, GREYHEART received a phone call from a recent adopter, stating that their newly adopted greyhound had bitten. Apparently Edgar had some separation anxiety earlier that day and this enraged his new owner. On his hands and knees, in the dogs face, his new owner started yelling at him, nose to nose while Edgar lay in his bed.....so the story was told. GREYHEART reminded the new adopter of their contractual obligations and that Edgar must come back to GREYHEART should he decide relinquishment.
On November 5, 2002, the adopter decided to return Edgar to GREYHEART. Proceedings to remove Edgar from the home was started immediately. The adopter stated that Edgar would be safe until we made the arrangements.
On November 6, 2002, the adopter called the Adrian Police, health department and several local veterinarians. The police report stated that Edgar had bitten the owner on 11/5/02, the previous day. The police advised the adopter that Edgar had to be quarantined for 10 days.....that this is state law in biting cases, the officer stated that Edgar could go to the Animal Inn to be kept for the 10 day period but the adopter did not take that route. The police did not know that GREYHEART was trying desperately to reach this individual for EDGARS return. Phone call after phone call was ignored.
The adopter made call after call to veterinarians in his area, trying to have Edgar euthanized..........all refused, BUT ONE!!!
On November 7, 2002, the contract between GREYHEART and this individual was breached. EDGAR was euthanized and decapitated, his head sent to Lansing for rabies testing.
This situation and sequence of events has been one of the most painful times in GREYHEARTS history. Everyone who adopts from GREYHEART signs a binding contract, that for any reason the greyhound is not working out that he/she MUST BE RETURNED to the organization. This contract was BLATANTLY BREACHED by this individual.
EDGAR was current on all vaccinations and rabies, therefore the threat was a 0 issue. All his life EDGAR was in a controlled environment.....breeding farm, racetrack, foster homes, etc.
EDGAR lost his life so readily because of INTENTION......this individual wanted EDGAR DEAD for REVENGE. This man searched and searched for a way to keep EDGAR from GREYHEART and found 1 vet to go along with his plan of revenge. The only way this veterinarian could abide by his wishes and stay within the law was decapitation, so it is believed.
Biting is an extreme situation. Any and all dogs can bite. For the most part greyhounds bite for a reason....behavior modification has been successful.
THIS WAS AN ACT OF SPITE, VENGEANCE AND REVENGE BY THIS MAN.
PLEASE join us in remembering EDGAR with a candlelight vigil on Saturday, December 28, 2002, on the steps of City Hall in Adrian, Michigan from 1 to 3pm. PLEASE ATTEND TO SHOW YOUR SUPPORT AND TO HELP US SPEAK OUT FOR THOSE WHO CAN NOT SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES.
We must be their voice............we must be EDGAR'S voice.........
