Star
Dedicated to my bright shining "Star" who went home on September 17, 2001.
Star was about a year old (or less) laying on a sidewalk in the hot sun in
front of a drug store with no water when I first saw her in the summer of
1998. I thought she was sick. Turns out she was just pregnant, hot and
thirsty. I purchased her from the vagrant who had her attached to a piece
of stretch elastic tape for $10.00. Just two days later she gave birth to
four whopping puppies!
She was undernourished and had quite a time feeding
them, so I had to help bottle feed them. I later found good homes for the
four pups when they were old enough, but couldn't part with Star. She and I
bonded quickly, even though I had four other "large" dogs. She was my
little lap/nap dog; my other dogs were too big for that, although they get
plenty of spoiling. Star got along great with all the "big dogs" and she
was the smartest, most joyful little friend to us all. She wrestled with all
the big dogs, jumping on their backs and attacking their necks, as if she
could really do them harm, and they delightedly indulged her letting her
think she was the "top dog." Her little squeally growl would always make me
laugh.
We had Star with us for about three years......part of me died when
Star was suddenly taken away from us by an accident which changed my life
forever. Star went very unexpectedly to heaven leaving me with a huge hole
in my heart.
I will never get over shock at the loss of Star and miss her
more than words can say. I cry for her often and think of her daily. I
look forward to holding her again in heaven - my lap is so empty without
her.
She was my little angel and "bright shining Star."
Twinkle, twinkle little black Star,
I wonder, wonder where you are,
You brought so much joy wherever you went,
The energy you had was never quite spent.
You'd jump so high and run so fast,
Taking on all the big dogs in days past,
Your little brown eyes staring into mine,
You were like a happy ray of bright sunshine.
Always ready to go for a ride in the car,
I'd open the door and in would jump Star,
Your little paws on the steering wheel,
My heart was so easy for you to steal.
You were so cute the way you played,
And I can't count the hours on my lap you laid,
I miss your antics and playful squeals,
And how you ate so daintily at meals.
You dropped into my life as a great surprise,
And I fell immediately in love with those little brown eyes,
You left the same way you suddenly dropped in,
Like a leaf blown away by some strong gusty wind.
Don't forget me Star, because I love you so much,
I'll always miss your loving sweet gentle touch,
Your most favorite spot was on my lap,
Especially when we'd settle in for a nap.
Where did you land when you blew away,
To brighten someone's life in heaven I'd say,
It makes me sad that you're not still here,
But the love you gave me will always be there.
Thank you for all the love that you gave,
I treasure the memories you gave me to save,
If there's someone in heaven who took you in,
Thank them for me until I see you again.
I'll always miss you sweet little black Star,
Drop me a sign from wherever you are,
If you ever get blown down this way again,
There's a lap I know of you can always drop in.
