Barney

We got Barney a week after our other beloved Sammy died of cancer. A neighbour had his sister and my daughter fell in love again. Sadly our 14yr. old son was away on a student exchange and was not here when Sammy left us. We decide not to tell him until he came home and that was the same day we brought Barney home. It didn't help much, he was home before we were and was looking around the house for Sammy to give him the gift he brought home from Montreal for Sammy when his Dad decided it was time to tell him his pal of 12 yrs was gone. He liked Barney at first but then became a little bitter. He became angry that he was not home to hug Sammy goodbye, it was hard for him to except he was gone. Over the years he began to love Barney like the rest of us did.

On Sept 20, 2000 12 years later that dreaded day came again. This time my son was home and my husband wasn't as he is a trucker and was in the U.S. My daughter called me at work that evening and said something was wrong. When I got home Barney was bloated like a little piggy, he couldn't sit or lie down, He was diagnosed with stomach torsion there was nothing they could do for him, he was to old to pull through so we had let him go. It was so sad for all of us and worse to see my now 26 year old son sitting on the floor with tears in his eyes next to Barney comforting him in his last moments.

We said our goodbyes and Barney took his last breath and closed is eyes. It tore us apart. My son brought him home and buried him in my garden, where he liked to roam, and I can talk to him every time I'm in the yard.

We miss him dearly and always will. He'll stay in our hearts forever and ever.
