Lassie

1968 - 1982

Ode to a Very Special Friend

Just a cute ball of fur - and a wagging tail
She came into our life - (way) back in 1968
A very special Christmas present - but soon, without fail
She knew she had a loving home - and it was going to be great.

So much more than a pet - she was our family
Giving us a very special love - that would never end
A sable and white beauty - she had to be our own "Lassie"
And through the years - she was my very best friend.

And when we had a fight - and one of us wanted to walk away
She could make us stop - and really see
How much she needed us both - every single day
By licking my hand - and resting her head on your knee.

How she loved to get into the mud and dirt
And come in with that sad look on her face
And those porcupine quills, God, how they must have hurt
But when she was brushed and cleaned, she could wind first place.

How it hurt to see her get old - and hardly able to walk
And it was so hard - knowing there was nothing we could do
But I know if somehow she could talk
She would not complain - for what she had to go through.

My heart was breaking - when I put the leash on her that day
I don't know how I found the strength to see it through
For all those years of joy we shared with her - how I wished there was a better way
For to this very day - it's the hardest thing I've ever had to do.

Even after all these years - she's still a part of us - and she always will be
And although all animal friends are very special to us -
THERE WILL ONLY BE ONE "LASSIE".

Lovingly remembered by Stan and Kathy
